Cammarata: the Stronghold of the Sicani

This is a short guide to Cammarata — a glimpse of what to see and do once you’ve finished your Sicily Divide stage for the day and feel like exploring the village around you (the same village that probably challenged you with the last climb of the afternoon). Cammarata is not just a technical stop or a scenic place to rest your legs. It’s a true “living nativity”, a fortress-town with an Arab-Norman urban layout that climbs steeply up the mountain that bears its name. For the cyclist who stops here, Cammarata offers a deep dive into the vertical history of Sicily.

The best advice is to let yourself get lost on foot — or take a gentle “cool-down” walk — through the historic centre, starting from the ruins of the Castle, once the residence of the Lords of Cammarata. Its tower, now used as an exhibition space, is a privileged viewpoint dominating the entire valley and revealing, at a glance, the fortified nature of the village. As you descend through its winding alleys, your first must-see stop is the Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari. Marked by a fire in centuries past, it still safeguards priceless treasures, including the paintings of Pietro d’Asaro, the Monoculus, and a monumental 16th-century wooden ciborium.

Continue your exploration through the urban maze until you reach the evocative Via dei Leoni, where the architecture becomes almost extreme: balconies nearly touch across the narrow street, and the sky above shrinks to a thin ribbon between the facades. A little further on, the imposing silhouette of the Church of Santa Domenica — known as La Badia — towers over the main square, a testament to the deep-rooted faith of this mountain community. It’s also worth making a short detour to the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima di Cammarata, one of the village’s spiritual landmarks, overlooking the town with its elegant late-Baroque façade.

If you still have some energy left, the viewpoints scattered around the historic centre — especially those near the Mother Church and the Castle — offer spectacular panoramas over the Platani Valley and the Sicani Mountains. They’re perfect for a sunset photo or a quiet moment after the day’s climb.

But above all, Cammarata is a stop of strong and sincere flavours — ideal for those who live by effort and pedal strokes. Here, the dairy tradition of the Sicani reigns supreme: Pecorino Siciliano DOP is the undisputed king of the table, followed by the local Caciocavallo and fresh ricotta. The cuisine doesn’t aim for frills, but substance: local meats, traditionally crafted cured meats, and dishes that carry the authentic taste of the Sicilian mountains. It’s the perfect “fuel”, rich in noble proteins, to restore your energy after a day spent conquering the slopes of the Sicily Divide.

Given the significant flow of cyclists in Cammarata, we recommend booking the accommodation well in advance, and in any case no later than one day before arrival.
